| The Smart
City-Coupe has changed alot since it was first put on sale in 1997. The
City-Coupe has changed in many ways over this time period. When the Smart
City-Coupe was first introduced, a special model was released to commemorate
this, which was called the Limited 1. The Limited 1 was special because
it had a black tridion with lite white panels. They also added white half-leather
seats, with a leather steering wheel and leather gear stick. This car had
the Passion specification engine, which gave an output of 40kW/55hp with
a maximum torque of 80Nm. After this car, a range of models were launched
to suit the lifestyles, this includes the Pure, Pulse, and Passion. These
were available in lite white, hello yellow and jack black or, optionally,
also in mad red and true blue metallic and with body panels in aqua green
and aqua orange. All these cars came with an attractive blue plastic used
throughout the interior. The cloth covering the seats matched the dashboard
and inside door panels. The Pure came with a solid blue covering over the
seats, which would be used throughout the interior of the Pure. The Pulse
and Passion models came with a patterned blue covering over the seats, which
is used throughout the interior. The only distinctive external difference
between the pure and the pulse and passion models is the solid roof that
is fitted to all Pure models, all the Pulse and Passion models came with
a glass roof which is a very nice feature of these models as it brightens
the interior of the car. Upto 2001 the City-Coupe stayed very much the same
with very slight additions to add to the comfort and ease of use to the
driver. These included the addition of a rear tailgate opening switch in
the car, more new panel colours, a 3 button key, and also moving the windscreen
washer nozzle to stop them from freezing in the winter. In 2001 alot of
changes were made to the whole smart range, these included the introduction
of new coloured panels, a change from blue to grey of the interior plastic,
engine power output changes to the pulse model, a front suspension change,
and in late 2001 the introduction of the right hand drive Smart cars. At
this point the colours that were available were: lite white, jack black,
phat red, stream green or optionally true blue metallic, river silver metallic,
bay grey metallic, and body panels in aqua vanilla, and numeric blue. In
2002, the City-Coupe had a face lift which included changes to the front
headlights and rear tail lights. A few more options added to the model range
in 2002 include a paddle gear change system, a sliding glass roof, and a
new range of coloured panels. These included the introduction of star blue
metallic and scratch black, which replaced aqua vanilla and true blue metallic. |
